Vacation, Interrupted

Vacation days in the U.S. are gradually dwindling, as large groups of people, especially younger workers, aren’t taking advantage of their days off. A Google Consumer Survey revealed that 43 percent of Americans did not take a day off last summer, and employees are rejecting their hard-earned vacation days, as four in 10 Americans are leaving an average of 3.2 days of paid time off unused each year. This news is unhealthy, and needs to be reversed, because vacations are good for the heart and soul.

If at all possible, take a vacation from the responsibilities and stresses at work and unplug completely from the phone and laptop. When work demands don’t allow a 100 percent break, limit time away from family and friends by blocking out short periods of time and focus on being highly productive and efficient.

Unified communications, collaboration and mobile solutions provide many of the same resources available at work while at a hotel, café or relatives’ home. With these productivity enablers, those emails and voicemails can be handled quickly, an online web conference can be completed in an hour, and a quick IM can address questions in minutes. These tools allow employees to stay on top of work projects without losing entire days of vacation fun.

Calls and emails in one place for fast review and responses. Email boxes fill up fast. With UC and mobile resources, work emails are routed to the mobile phone where they can be prioritized for answering during the blocked out work hour or handled after the vacation is over.

Incoming phone calls and voicemails also can be moved to the mobile phone and organized to save time. The audio message is streamed to the mobile device where all recent activity can be tracked. Employees can review and respond to a customer with a question or a coworker with a problem. When a voicemail does need a response, make the call without getting stuck with a huge calling fee by moving incoming calls on to the Wi-Fi and off the cellular network to avoid call charges.

Join a can’t-miss meeting. The business doesn’t stop during vacations and sometimes an employee needs to be on a conference call or online meeting. The powerful combination of UC tools and a mobile client integrates calendars and streamlines scheduling, managing and participating in audio or online conferences. Employees can join multimedia work sessions through their laptops, tablets or phones and easily share spreadsheets or presentation materials with others in the meeting.

Keep deliverables and projects on track to meet upcoming deadlines. Deadlines don’t move and that can make vacations inconvenient. A quick IM or text can help a colleague make a decision that will keep the business-at-hand moving forward.

Visuals are another great, quick way to share knowledge and help colleagues avoid confusion on important projects. Desktop sharing shows a coworker or a client the hard-to-explain specifics and quickly reveals processes or details that may not be easily understood through email or voicemail.

Understand the Value of Vacations

Balancing work and life is always difficult, and vacations add another layer of complexity. Studies show that days off lead to better health and more productivity. Earned vacations should be taken without guilt because business and work projects can move steadily forward by checking in for short periods when it’s absolutely necessary. The many communication options in mobile, UC and collaboration tools will keep the work on track for those critical times when employees can’t completely check out on their days off.

ShoreTel 2015 Mid-Year Review

The year is only half complete and ShoreTel has already racked up loads of achievements. In the highly competitive unified communications (UC) and collaboration landscape, analyst firms, industry experts and customers weigh in on how ShoreTel is making an impact and separating itself from the other solution providers.

January 2015—ShoreTel Adds Depth and Breadth to Partner Network
A sign of a healthy ecosystem is a long list of eager partners. ShoreTel Innovation Network grew to 85 partners that are developing hardware, software and services to extend the capabilities of ShoreTel’s unified communications (UC) and enterprise contact center solutions. In early 2015, Adtran, Bell Canada, ClearOne, Polaris Communications and Xarios Technologies joined the group of market and innovation leaders, and in April 2015 HP joined the fast-leaning crowd in the Innovation Network.

February 2015—Heather Tenuto Recognized as CRN 2015 Channel Chief
Everyone appreciates good leadership, and The Channel Company named ShoreTel vice president of worldwide channel program Heather Tenuto to its prestigious list of CRN 2015 Channel Chiefs. This annual list showcases the most powerful leaders in the IT channel who hold direct responsibility for driving growth and revenue through indirect channel partners. “Heather has been instrumental in the addition of cloud tiers, and creating learning programs that are key in enabling our partners to compete, especially in the UCaaS market,” said David Petts, senior vice president of worldwide sales at ShoreTel.

March 2015—ShoreTel Wins Five-Star Rating from CRN
Businesses look to The Channel Company’s CRN 2015 Partner Program Guide as the definitive listing of technology vendors and service solution providers. The guide lists ShoreTel with a Five-Star rating, the highest possible, based on ShoreTel’s investments in program offerings, partner profitability, partner training, education and support, marketing program and resources, sales support and communication.

March 2015—ShoreTel Extends Network Services to ShoreTel Sky Customers
Some cloud customers have gaps within their IT resources that prevent them from taking full advantage of unified communications. ShoreTel expanded its offerings to fill that empty space. Now ShoreTel Sky customers can leverage ShoreTel’s Network Services Portfolio to ensure that their IP networks are designed and configured for optimum performance.

April 2015—ShoreTel Adds Mobility App for Apple Watch
ShoreTel Mobility was among the first UC applications available for Apple Watch. When users download the mobile app to their Apple Watch, they can stay connected without taking their iPhone from their pockets. For anyone who enjoys wearable devices, it’s time to move into the future and view instant messages, re-dial a missed enterprise calls, and join meetings from Apple Watch.

May 2015—Gartner Positions ShoreTel in the “Leaders” Quadrant for Unified Communication for Midsize Enterprises, North America
The high-profile magic quadrant reports from Gartner are hugely popular. Gartner evaluated 10 UC solution providers targeting midsize businesses, and the analyst firm positioned ShoreTel in its “Leaders” quadrant. The analyst firm reviewed multiple criteria to understand each UC providers “completeness of vision” and “ability to execute.”

June 2015—Boston Globe Saves $1.6M PLUS Improves Communications
ShoreTel customers continue to reap the benefits of a brilliantly simple UC system. The Boston Globe Newspaper worked with Datamart to upgrade its communication system and expects a six-figure savings over five years.

July 2015—Nemertes Research IDs ShoreTel as Lowest First-Year and Five-Year Costs for IP and UC Deployments
Nemertes compared first-year and five-year costs across eight UC solution providers and ShoreTel’s on-premises solution came in with the lowest first-year operational costs for all size rollouts, and the lowest five-year total cost of ownership for 200, 1,500 and 10,000 endpoints. ShoreTel continues to deliver the value and performance enterprises want that organization’s need for communications.

What to Watch for in the Coming Months

ShoreTel Introduces ShoreTel Connect
The wait is over. ShoreTel is releasing a common platform, ShoreTel Connect that gives customers ultimate flexibility and a personalized communications experience. Customers will soon be able to deploy unified communications and collaboration on premise (ShoreTel Connect ONSITE), in the cloud (ShoreTel Connect CLOUD), or as a mix in a hybrid model (ShoreTel Connect HYBRID). Scheduled for release in the second half of 2015, ShoreTel Connect represents the company’s largest software release ever. Stay tuned!
